Clip of the Day - Right At Your Door
When I was a kid, nothing scared me more than the threat of nuclear war. I still vividly remember watching a New Twilight Zone episode where a woman could stop time which ended with her freezing everything just as the bomb was about to hit. That night I slept beside the radio just so that I would be alerted when the inevitable began. Reagan has a lot to answer for.
Since becoming an adult I’ve sought out films with an apocalyptic setting. I don’t know if it’s because it’s one of the few things that can still scare me, it give me an opportuity to face my fears or simply because crisis oiften brings out great characterization. In any event, I’m in luck, because it looks like there’s a resurgence happening in the apocaplyptic genre. The television show Jericho is set for the Fall, and now it seems as if Lion’s Gate will be releasing the film Right At Your Door.
A chemical attack in Los Angeles, as set by terrorists, forces a man to seal off his home to keep from becoming infected. Unfortunately, his wife is on the wrong side of the house and he has to decide whether to allow her in and risk death or watch her die outside. The trailer can be found here, courtesy of a tip from Ain’t It Cool News.

I too was terrified as a child by the threat of nuclear war. The culprit for me was the Nicholas Meyer made for TV movie ‘The Day After’, starring Steve Guttenberg and Jason Robards. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the movie recreates what it would be like if there was a nuclear attack…and it manages to pull it off pretty realistically, incorporating documentary style footage of what i assume is accurate military procedure. I highly recommend it…especially considering Nicholas Meyer is the man responsible for The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country!

I’ve seen The Day After, but not until my fear of the bomb was already deeply ingrained in me. I consider myself lucky, because if I hadn’t gradually become accustomed to nuclear armageddon through tamer programs beforehand, The Day After would have probably shattered my little mind completely.
And congratulations on launching The Documentary Blog! That was quick!

Yeah, as a child the fear of the bomb surpassed everything, with a strong fear of tornadoes trailer pretty closely behind it. After seeing Return of the Living Dead, I would think about how horrible it would be if zombies rose from the dead. Not because of the walking corpses, but because the government would nuke us to get rid of the problem!
Oh, and speaking of documentaries, have you seen ‘Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie’? It’s narrated by Shatner and was directed by Peter Kuran, who handled some of the effects on the orignal star wars movies (among other huge effects films). The movie is amazing. He also went on to do some sequels…’Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero’ and ‘Nukes in Space’.
