The culprit for me was the Nicholas Meyer made for TV movie 'The Day After', starring Steve Guttenberg and Jason Robards. For anyone who hasn't seen it, the movie recreates what it would be like if there was a nuclear attack...and it manages to pull it off pretty realistically, incorporating documentary style footage of what i assume is accurate military procedure. I highly recommend it...especially considering Nicholas Meyer is the man responsible for The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country! I consider myself lucky, because if I hadn't gradually become accustomed to nuclear armageddon through tamer programs beforehand, The Day After would have probably shattered my little mind completely. After seeing Return of the Living Dead, I would think about how horrible it would be if zombies rose from the dead. Not because of the walking corpses, but because the government would nuke us to get rid of the problem! Oh, and speaking of documentaries, have you seen 'Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie'? It's narrated by Shatner and was directed by Peter Kuran, who handled some of the effects on the orignal star wars movies (among other huge effects films). The movie is amazing. He also went on to do some sequels...'Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero' and 'Nukes in Space'.
