7th Film of a 7th List

7My New Plaid Pants, which boasts the perfect mix of horror, beefcake and Winona Ryder, has posted a response to Cinematical’s 7 Best Horror Movies of the Last 7 Years.

Both of these lists have lead me to consider my own choices, posted below. Films were chosen based on overall effectiveness, so some movies were cut which contained scenes that on their own would make the grade if they weren’t saddled with garbage (see the Dawn of the Dead remake). Please keep in mind that these are my choices at the moment, and tomorrow I would no doubt switch things around or remember other more appropriate picks.

1. Hostel - Terrifying as much for why the events unfold as how. The last twenty minutes in particular had me gripping the arms of my seat, and afterwards I felt that elusive high I only get every few years from the movies.

2. Shaun of the Dead
- It may be primarily a comedy, but the zombies are played straight and for most of it’s running time Shaun of the Dead manages a level of suspense that eludes straight horror films.

3. The Descent - While the claustrophobic elements didn’t bother me, the full-on creature feature carnage satisfied a craving I wasn’t even sure I had. Review here.

4. See No Evil
- An absolutely nasty throwback to the slasher period that makes all the recent crop of survival horror films pale in comparison.

5. The Blair Witch Project - Along with Hostel and Land of the Dead, one of the most divisive horror films of the past 7 years. I have enough experience in the forest to know what it’s like to wander around in the dark, but not enough to stop being afraid of what might be out there.

6. Final Destination & 7. Snakes on a Plane - Two straightforward thrill rides with both craft and balls to spare.

I encourage anyone who feels the same itch make their own list and either post them in the comments, or on their own blog.

I’ll give it a go. Probably similar to your list…

    1. Blair Witch Project
    2. The Descent
    3. Land of the Dead
    4. High Tension
    5. Shaun of the Dead
    6. Hostel
    7. Cabin Fever

Damn, how did I forget about Shaun of the Dead? That totally should’ve/would’ve made my list. I had some problems with Hostel that a second viewing may fix. Haven’t seen SoaP yet.

Haven’t seen See No Evil, either, and really? It is worth seeing? This is the first I’ve heard so… guess it’s going on the Queue then.

I’m a freak for the Final Destination movies, and actually prefer the 2nd one (more brilliantly elaborate set-pieces and no Devon Sawa = better), but I still don’t think they’d have made my top 7. Even though I’ve FD2 more than any of the ones I did place. Combined. Hmm, maybe I should re-think my list…

I’ll post this on my blog also…

    1. Slither
    2. House of 1000 Corpses/The Devil’s Rejects
    3. May
    4. Jason X
    5. Shaun of the Dead
    6. Hostel
    7. Bubba Ho-Tep

I felt kind of bad not having very many foreign films on the list. There were a whole bunch that nearly made it, but all of them fell short one way or another. Bio-Zombie would have been a shoo-in, but my research showed that it was released in 1998 and just missed the cut-off. Rats.

Jay - I had High Tension on the list, but it was taken off for the same reason a number of other gems were discarded; an unnecessary and lame twist ending. Cabin Fever was up there, too, but I decided to stick to only one film per director.

JA - I couldn’t believe the reception Hostel got. So many people dismissed it as frat-boy horror yet I had an entirely contrary take on it. For awhile I couldn’t tell if it was me or the rest of the world that was missing the point. And I was also surprised that See No Evil received no attention at all, though I did remember thinking after watching it that even though I enjoyed it immensely I could never actually recommend it to anyone. I couldn’t decide between Final Destination 1 or 2, but I haven’t seen either of them in a few years. Maybe I should take another look.

Louis - Your list reads almost like my next 7. You liked Slither that much? I enjoyed it, but it left me a little cold. I think it was because the main characters didn’t really seem to be reacting emotionally to the situation in the second half. I’d be interested in knowing why you chose what you did.

  5. Jay C. Says:

Yeah, the twist doesn’t make any sense at all, but for me the beheading on the stairs made up for it.

I regret not including Slither. I enjoyed it a great deal. Not as much as Night of the Creeps…but it still should’ve made my list. I would swap it with Cabin Fever.
