Horror Roundtable - Week Fifty-Three

Name your favourite David Z. moment.

Nick - DVDTrash

Definitely has to be the The Eurotrash Film Pinnacle Project, was great to see so many others like the same crap as me!

Warren - 150 Days of Sodom

When he posted all the posters he found online for the Italian film Tough to Kill, I definitely thought we were on the same wavelength.

Curt - Groovy Age of Horror

Haha–where to begin?!? How about with, “Hello David Z (I presume).” Congrats on the new arrival, David Z (I presuuume!), and keep up the great work!!

Kimberly - Cinebeats

I’ve gotta go with the ongoing They Call Her Archived project he’s been putting together. I’m really impressed with his focus and dedication. I find it all really inspiring and it’s great that he’s sharing all his stuff with his blog readers. Cheers to David!

Steven - The Horror Blog

I failed to win a contest David Z. held to give away copies of his excellent chapbook Ascension of the Blind Dead, but he sent it to me anyway for which I am incredibly grateful. I was already familar with The Blind Dead from years back, but David’s chapbook prompted me to obsess over the characters, leading to J. buying the set for me. Thanks, David!

JA - My New Plaid Pants

The word “GoonaHumpasploitation” rocks my world.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this week’s Roundtable tribute to David Z. of Tomb It May Concern. David is the only person to have participated in a full year’s worth of Roundtables, so we figured he deserved a week off.

Happy Birthday, Ray Harryhausen!

I met Mr. Harryhausen at Fantasia a few years back. I never really get flustered around celebrities, but fellow animators intimidate the hell out of me. When I told him I was an animator, Mr. Harryhausen told me to “Keep it up!” Now, whenever I’m having a bad day, I remember that moment and I feel a little better. Happy Birthday, Mr. Harryhausen!

The Hour of the Dragon

It may be stretching the mandate of this blog a bit, but Robert E. Howard’s sword and sorcery tales were filled with so many eldritch horrors I think I can get away with it.

After years of langushing at Warner Bros., the rights to Conan have been transferred to New Line Cinema. This is potentially great news, as people tell me that New Line showed a great deal of patience and respect in bringing an adaptation of Lord of the Rings to the screen. While I’m one of the few Howard enthusiasts who actually enjoyed the Milius version of Conan, and I’m still hopeful that Arnold Schwarzenegger could return as Conan the King, I welcome the opporunity to start fresh with true adaptations of Howard’s work.

But most of all I relish the idea that this could spawn numerous rip-offs. I think this is just the thing to bring the Italian genre film industry back to its former glory.

Fantasia 2007

If all goes according to plan I will be travelling to Montreal for Fantasia, North America’s largest genre film festival. Nothing from the schedule is really leaping out at me this year, but that’s alright considering how often my favourite films of the festival are the ones which I have zero expectations. Here’s a sampling of what’s on the bill.

The Signal, Flight of the Living Dead, Roomates, Hatchet, Hell’s Ground, S&Man, Woman Transformation, Exte: Hair Extension, Right At Your Door, The Tripper, A Bloody Aria, On Evil Ground, End of the Line, The Rage, Death Note, Mulberry Street, Home Sick, Poultrygeist, The Backwoods, Frissons des Vampires, Dead In 3 Days, The Last Winter, The Ferryman, Trapped Ashes, Postal, and many more.

In addition, scheduled guests include Jean Rollin and Uwe Boll among others. And after all that, I’m ashamed to say that I’m most anticipating a trip to Cosmos.

Top 100 Films

A week ago the American Film Institute released a list of the 100 greatest American films as chosen by over 1500 industry professionals. I was curious to see how Horror did in the rankings, but not enough to post the results here. A new development has made me change my mind.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists compiled their own top 100 list. It’s interesting to see the differences, and similarities, between the two lists, though considering that the AFI took votes from a wide range of people in the film industry, and the AWFJ list is composed entirely of journalists, it’s not exactly a controlled experiment.

I wasn’t expecting any horror to make it to either list, and was pleasantly surprised to see a few entries sneak in. What’s even more surprising is that there doesn’t seem to be any overlap between the two lists in regards to horror.

AFI - Psycho, King Kong, Jaws, The Silence of the Lambs.

AWFJ - Alien, Carrie, Rosemary’s Baby.

Kind of puts the lie to the idea that women aren’t really into horror. Gender studies isn’t really my cup of tea, but I wonder if a case can be made for the differences between these two lists and what it means concerning men, women, and their approach to horror. For example, two of the films in the AWFJ list have something to do with body horror, specifically child birth (all three if you want to stretch it), compared to zero in the AFI list.

Horror Roundtable - Week Fifty-Two

Describe your most memorable Roundtable experience.

Curt - Groovy Age of Horror

I had tons of fun coming up with and posting that Hammer monster mash-up that never was!

Dave - Rue Morgue’s The Abbatoir

Hands down the April Fool’s Day post with the fake obscure films. Everyone took a different angle and the entries were hilarious. I was also quite happy to stumble upon a Google images pic to help sell mine.

Sean T. Collins - Attentiondeficitdisorderly Too Flat

Aside from the enjoyment I get out of being a part of this neato concept, I’d say it was discovering that I was a part of some weird untapped Monster Squad zeitgeist in the “name an underappreciated gem that deserves a DVD release” roundtable. “Well, Steve, but he doesn’t count!” “Doesn’t count?!?!”

Kimberly - Cinebeats

I really loved the April Fool’s Horror Roundtable. Everyone came up some great stuff for that. I ended up posting my own contribution in the comments section since I was late with it, but it was really fun to write.

JA - My New Plaid Pants

I’m still getting over Sean dissing Halloween. I’ll be sending you my therapy bills, Collins!

David Z. - Tomb It May Concern

I’m going to have to say that doing the drive-in night was my favorite-since I did that EXACT program for some friends a week later and it was as good as I hoped!

Bill Cunningham - DisContent

I’m just amazed we got this far…what’s next?

More of the same, Bill! We’re moving into Double Jeopardy, where the questions get harder while the stakes get higher. As always, thanks to everyone who has contributed and for sticking with it for one whole year! Not to mention all the people who have stopped by to read the responses and leave their own opinions in the comments below. Let’s get loaded!

At the Suicide of the Last Jew in the World in the Last Cinema in the World

I’m off to the drive-in for the first time in years. 1408 and Mr. Brooks double feature. Have a nice weekend and make sure you pop by later today for the first anniversary of The Horror Roundtable.

Movies

My New Plaid Pants gets a Roth-sized boner over some stills from the Funny Games remake.

Miike talks Macaroni Westerns.

The Day of the Dead remake has been held back due to reshoots. I hope they add more zombies jumping out of third-storey windows. I can’t get enough of that shit.

It won’t appear for months and already 30 Days of Night has been given the green light for a sequel.

Just when it appears he’s settling down, along comes Cronenberg with a short film for Cannes featuring the director in a theatre bathroom with a gun to his head. For three minutes. Le sigh.

Susan Sarandon’s son showed up at a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. According to him, up until now he hadn’t been allowed to watch “the naughty parts.” I wonder if he knew that most of the “naughty parts” involved his mom in various states of undress, squirming in an orgasmic frenzy. Awkward.

I had no idea Larry Cohen wrote Captivity. Consider me interested.

DVD

It appears that Grindhouse Releasing is back in business. I remember being saddened when it went on hiatus, due mainly to it being one of the few games in town at the time. Now that there are any number of cult DVD companies, many of whom are closing shop, I wonder if they’re even necessary.

Interviews

Wes Craven has been making the rounds in support of his appearance On The Lot, and they’re actually pretty good. Planet Gossip includes Craven’s take on the recent trend in hard horror.

“They do it in ways that some people find nauseating and disgusting, but that’s what the genre has always been doing…I forced myself to go see Hostel. I hate torture. I hate the idea of it. I must say it took me right to the edge of being so disgusted I would leave, but I couldn’t stop watching.”

And Jo Blo tackles Freddy, Las Vegas and Craven’s potential involvement with Masters of Horror.

“I’m always considering doing it, and then just when I think I have a month clear, it turns out that I don’t. That’s the only problem I’ve had that’s kept me out.”

Ifilm speaks to former horror wunderkind Kevin Williamson about the possibility of another Scream installment and what happened with Cursed.

Television

Bruce Campbell is appearing in a supporting role as a alcoholic, womanizing former spy in a new television show called Burn Notice. On the one had I find it slightly unbelievable that Campbell isn’t able to get top billing in show of his own. On the other, side characters often get to steal the show, and i have little doubt that will be happening here.

Literature

The Guardian reviews A Thing of Unspeakable Horror: The History of Hammer Films, providing a touch of cultural context themselves.

Skull Ring has the scoop on NPR’s take on vampire literature.

Comics

The Daily Cross Hatch favourably reviews the latest Tales From the Crypt collection. Can’t say I agree.

And Brian Hibbs takes a swing at the new Tales From The Crypt comic, calling it “the worst comic I’ve read so far this year”. No kidding.

Both links courtesy of Journalista, of course.

Gaming

The potential of the Wii finally realized. Resident Evil 4 to be released for the system.

Events

I hear Zombies are all the rage for this year’s prom themes.

Misc.

News Leader has a pretty damn good primer on the zombie phenomenon.

Wes Craven sues Pauly Shore. I’ve got nothing.

Real World

The News Tribune reports on a family terrorized by what seems to be technologically impossible phone threats that may be at least partially inspired by horror movies.

1408 Round-Up

As much as this article’s tone gets on my nerves, the quotes from those actually involved in 1408 have prompted me to take in the movie this weekend. I particularly enjoyed Samuel Jackson’s take on the recent spate of hardcore horror thrills.

“People used to jump for Vincent Price and now they jump for different shit … Kids are special-effects savvy. They’re making their own slasher movies in the sixth grade.”

Other highlights include Cusack’s comparison of his character to Houdini, director Mikael Hafstrom’s praise of Stephen King’s short stories and the revelation that Eli Roth was once slated to direct 1408.

Cinematical has posted their Box Office predictions for the weekend, with 1408 at number one with a 50 million dollar take. That seems pretty crazy to me, especially when it’s up against the family-friendly Evan Almighty.

And finally, a hotel in Florida is actively inviting guests to stay in room 1408 after watching the film. William Castle would be proud.
