Cloverfield Teaser Trailer

A few warnings upfront. The quality here is atrocious, particularly the sound. Also, Paramount has been taking these down fairly quickly, so I can’t guarantee how much longer this particular video will be available.

People have been speculating as to the nature of the J.J. Abrams-produced project code-named Cloverfield for awhile now. The trailer seen above has only added fuel to the fire.

In the event that you won’t, or can’t, see for yourself, the teaser shows a group of young adults throwing a farewell party for a friend in an apartment in New York City. Distant rumbling, power outages, and inhuman roars prompt the partygoers to go to the roof to see what’s going on. An explosion blocks away causes everyone to panic, making their way to the streets. There a giant projectile falls into the crowd, causing all sorts of property damage. The trailer is seen through the lens of the video cameras from the party and apparently the entire movie will be shot the same way.

The general consensus seems to be that this will be a giant monster movie, with some speculating that it is in fact a remake of The Host or Godzilla. Others are convinced that it will be a Lost tie-in.

Despite the quality of the video, I’m sold. I’ve been anticipating a ground-level kaiju movie for years.

    NICE.

Saw a preview for this last night prior to the ultra-bland Transformers movie. I quickly went from “Oh boy, another teen drama” to very intrigued. The distant roars were certainly evocative of the invisible Lost beasties.

My only worry is that I believe the release date is for mid-January, a time usually reserved for Hollywood’s biggest stinkers.

I happen to know for a fact that this is a trailer for an American remake of “The Host”, a horror film out of South Korea also known as “Gwoemul”. The production date they released to the public (July 5th I believe?) is not in fact the actual date that shooting began, and was meant to throw everyone off because it seems of course far too short a time for a 30 million picture to be completed by and released on January 18th, 2008. The footage you see in this trailer was shot seperately and was created especially for use in the preview, and may or may not end up in the final cut of the film. This is why the main character is going to Japan, which is just South East of South Korea, the country of origin for “The Host”, and this is also why a shot begins specifically and intentionally on several rows od Sushi in the middle of the trailer which you can clearly see. I hope that this will allow everyone to sleep at ease tonight. Once again, this is quite simply a trailer (albeit a clever one) for the American remake of the foreign horror film, “The Host”.

This could be a contemporary version of The Beast of Averoigne by Clark Ashton Smith. HP Lovecraft spin-off / rip-off. An Alien riding a comet that crashes on earth / earthquake / explosion in the beginning, the spinning roaring sounds / flying black creature with super-powers and red eyes?….perhaps? End of the world Ma! Perhaps?
