Night of the Comet Screening

Hey, Boils and Ghouls. Sorry I haven’t been around the past week. There isn’t really a good reason for my absence. I’ve just been working on some stuff that doesn’t involve the computer, and I’ve fallen behind a bit. Thank you to everyone who wrote in assuming I was dead. I’m touched.

I couldn’t let the week close out without mentioning a cool little event happening in my own backyard this weekend. While Ottawa may be the independent horror film production of Canada, in all other regards it fails miserably. Ottawa has two repertory theatres, yet in my nearly five year exile here only a small handful of genre films have been shown. I’ve been to cities one-fifth the size that have more life in them.

Well, the cats over at Drunken Master Revue have decided to remedy the situation. This Saturday night at 11:30 pm they’ll be screening a 35mm print of Night of the Comet at the Mayfair on Bank St. for five bucks. Night of the Comet is one of my formative horror experiences, as the very first Fangoria magazine I ever bought ran a story on it, and the pictures within instilled in me a lifelong love for zombies.

So, if you’re in town I highly recommend checking it out. It’s all the mid-’80s, cheerleader with a machine gun mowing down zombie action you could hope for.

And the Academy Award Goes To…

I was doing housework last night, so I decided to have the Academy Awards playing in the background as I tidied. This was the first time in years that I had watched or listened to it. One thing that I had forgotten was how moved I usually get when some of the less-known recipients receive their awards. I’m a big softy.

In horror, Pan’s Labryinth picked up half of the awards it was nominated for, including Best Achievement in Make-up, Best Achievement in Art Direction and Best Achievement in Cinematography. The major category it was up for, Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, was won by The Lives of Others. I’ve heard great things about that movie, and hope to catch it sometime soon. The only other notably creepy nominee was Monster House, which slipped into the Best Animated Feature Film of the Year category and lost out to Happy Feet.

Ennio Morricone received his honorary Academy Aawrd, and I got chills when they played the theme from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Oooeeeoooeeeooo wa wa wa. Clint Eastwood presented the award, and as he rattled off a list of some of Morricone’s more memorable films I swear he slipped Red Sonja in there. Probably the best part of the show. I can just imagine Clint kicking back with some brewskies and relaxing with sword and sorcery b-movies. Morricone’s contributions to horror received no love in the montage, but they did mention The Thing and Exorcist II - The Heretic in the title scrawl. Congratulations, maestro!

Other small horror-related moments included mentions of Darren McGavin, Richard Fleischer and others in the montage of the recently deceased, as well as Forest Whitaker giving a shout-out to drive-ins during his acceptance speech for Best Actor. I bet Joe Bob Briggs was happy.

Freaky Fridays at McGill University

I’ve included this in the Day Planner of the Dead section, but I think it merits an entry of it’s own. The Science department at McGill University has been hosting a movie night called Freaky Fridays with the majority of films being shown falling under horror or science fiction. The aspect that puts the series over the edge is that they also include lectures with each screening that pertains to the subject matter of the film. Notable examples from past screenings.

Sea monsters unmasked

by Dr. Anthony Ricciardi (McGill, Redpath Museum & McGill School of Environment)
followed by the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Werewolves

by Dr. Murray Humphries (McGill, Natural Resource Sciences)
followed by the film American Werewolf in London.

Count on it: when numbers mean the difference between you and roadkill

by Dr. Nilima Nigam (McGill, Mathematics and Statistics)
followed by the Canadian film The Cube.

Overpopulation of the earth

by Dr. Nigel Roulet (McGill, School of the Environment & Department of Geography)
followed by the film Soylent Green.

How birds really do it!
by Dr. David M. Bird (McGill, Avian Science and Conservation Centre)
followed by the classic Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds.

Invasion of the bug eyed aliens: exploring myths in American post-war movies
by Dr. Michael Bisson, Anthropology, McGill.
Followed by the movie They live.

The next two screenings are Ophidophobia: What is it with snakes? and Shrunkenhead Fever. I wish someone would record these lectures. Makes me wish I had a car so I could do it myself. Thanks to the lovely J. for the head’s up.
