Bloodrayne, Wicker Man and Lady In The Water Represent.

The nominations are in, and once again horror has a good showing for this year’s awards season. That’s right, the nominees for The Razzies have been announced. Up for Worst Movie honours are Lady In The Water, Bloodrayne and The Wicker Man remake, and all three films made the cut for the most nominated pictures of the year.

Bloodrayne, 6 Nominations
- Worst Picture, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director and Screenplay

Wicker Man, 5 Nominations - Worst Picture, Actor, Screenplay, Remake and Screen Couple

Lady In The Water, 4 Nominations - Worst Picture, Supporting Actor, Director and Screenplay

Rounding out the horror nominees, David Thewlis also picked up a Worst Supporting Actor nod for his role in The Omen, Carmen Electra nabbed a nomination for Worst Supporting Actress for Scary Movie 4, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Beginning hit it and quit it for Worst Prequel or Sequel. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that only one horror movie was nominated for Worst Remake. Could things be looking up for horror?

Day Planner of the Dead - January 22nd, 2007

Here’s something I’ve been meaning to try for awhile. I’ll be compiling as many cool horror events I come across to give you the head’s up on what’s happening out there. This won’t be confined to just movie premieres or conventions, but will hopefully include some of the smaller, more obscure events.

If you’re aware of an event I can place here, or are planning one yourself, please send me an email at steven@thehorrorblog.com.

ZombieCon

zombieconThere’s plenty to do this weekend, from the zombie walk in Toronto being held in conjunction with the Toronto After Dark Film Festival to the Ottawa Zombie Walk. New York is holding there own today at ZombieCon, where the best and brightest will be munching on tourists in Midtown.

All horror and zombie enthusiasts are invited to join in on this ghoulish spree of shopping, bar-hopping, and street theatrics. Spectators will be eaten–all are encouraged to dress and make-up in their bloody, oozing, putrid, undead best.

The start location and time have been kept secret, but can be received via email at zombiecon@gmail.com. It may be too late by the time you read this, but if you’re wandering the streets be on the lookout for a very fasionable cannibalistic horde. And run. Run as long and hard as you possibly can.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival

tadff

The first Toronto After Dark Film Festival is this weekend, put together by the crazy kids over at Twitch Film, and it’s sure to be one wild shindig.

Some of the films on display this year include The Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell, Night of the Living Dorks, Vengeance, Frostbite, Mad Cowgirl, Tokyo Zombie, SL8N8, Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and many others. A special treat, and the main reason I’m kicking myself for missing this, is Lloyd Kaufman’s Make Your Own Damn Movie Masterclass, which is going to be showing clips from his most recent movie, Poultrygeist. Man, I can’t wait to see some undead chicken action.

You can read a report on the opening night festivities over at Twitch. Damn. I wish I was there. The last time Toronto took a shot at an independent genre film festival was back in ‘98 with the much-missed Toronto version of Fantasia. Sometimes I wear my Bloor Witch t-shirt and cry through the night for our loss. I certainly expect this event to fare better and wish them the best of luck, if only so I can attend next year.

Pinhead Vs. Samara

pinheadvssamara

Next up in our horror version of Battle of the Network Stars is the grim Pinhead facing off against the equally dour Samara from the Ring movies. I don’t know who will win, but you won’t catch me watching or opening anything to do with either of these creeps.

Vote in the sidebar for who you want to reach the next level. And if you’re feeling particularly impassioned, root for your favourite in the comments section and see if you can’t change someone’s mind. Also, keep in mind that voting for Dollman versus Leatherface ends tomorrow, so cast your votes now.

Dollman Vs. Leatherface

dollmanvsleatherface

The first match-up for the Halloween Monster Rally is The Dimunitive Dollman versus Lovely Leatherface Sawyer. Leatherface has the weight advantage over Dollman, but it remains to be seen whether he can hit a a target that isn’t confined to a wheelchair.

Vote in the sidebar for the character you want to see make it to the second round.

The First Annual Horror Blog Halloween Monster Rally!

rally

Many of you may recall a recent edition of the Horror Roundtable in which the participants discussed their favourite imaginary monster mash-ups. A few days after posting the Roundtable I began to wonder who would win in any given battle, a daydream that has lead to this, the first annual Horror Blog Halloween Monster Rally. Every day of this month, with a few days break between rounds, I will post a poll in the sidebar containing two contenders for the championship as taken from the Roundtable in question. The winner of each poll will go on to the next round, where they will face yet another monster.

Readers of this blog are invited to vote for their favourite to win in each confrontation. Each poll will last only two days. You may vote only once per day. I will also be writing a post announcing each match, and anyone is welcome to cheer on their favourite or convince others to vote their way.

Let’s get ready to RUUUUUUMMMMMMBLE!

Clip of the Day - Raging Boll

As promised, the footage of the Uwe Boll matches from this past weekend, courtesy of the Garden City hooligans at Film Junk. Unfortunately, rumours have been circulating that Boll promised the participants training and equipment but later reneged on the deal, saying that these weren’t going to be real matches so such things weren’t necessary. I certainly hope it isn’t true.

Boll Triumphant

ragingbollDirector Uwe Boll took on four more critics in the boxing ring over the weekend. Until the inevitable YouTube footage appears, you can read a recounting of the event at the International Herald Tribune.

“I like now the critics,” Boll told a news conference after the fights. “Everybody who was in the ring showed balls. Nobody dived.”

The article mentions that there were only 15 critics who took up the challenge. Even though I didn’t qualify to be one of the final 5, I’m proud to have been one of those 15. When’s the sequel, Dr. Boll?

Screengrabs from the bouts are available at the Rue Mortuary.

Clip of the Day - Jeffrey Combs at the Festival of Fear

At the Festival of Fear Jeffrey Combs spoke about his role as Edgar Allan Poe in Stuart Gordon’s upcoming adaptation of The Black Cat for the second season of Masters of Horror. Surprisingly, aside from his cameo in Edmond, Combs and Gordon haven’t worked on a film together since Castle Freak over a decade ago. Another clip on Combs’ role in Re-Animator can be found here.

Festival of Fear Journal - Day #1

blairDue to circumstances beyond my control J. and I were unable to attend the majority of the first day of The Festival of Fear. However, we did work it enough that we were able to get there for the last hour and change, and had to decide on which aspect of the convention we would most want to see in that limited amount of time. Our choices were the convention floor or the Linda Blair Q + A. We decided to go with Blair because we could hit the salesfloor anytime. That was our first mistake.

I have the uncanny ability to sit beside the most annoying people in any given situation. If you want peace and quiet, sit anywhere other than beside me. The first twenty minutes of sitting in the auditorium were spent waiting for Linda Blair to show up and listening to the couple behind us speculate as to possible reasons why she was running late.

-Maybe she’s too busy getting her breasts powdered. Or she didn’t shave her… stuff.

-Only my generation or younger does that!

Just when I was ready to give up, Linda Blair arrived. The next fifteen minutes felt like an hour. Blair spent her Q + A preaching to the crowd about the Linda Blair World Heart Foundation, offering up surreal bon mots like the following.

“I literally gave up my career in order to take a stand for the suffering that I saw. It’s not just animals that are suffering. Children are suffering. People are suffering. The world is suffering. It is the future. But I am a grassroots organization. Everyone knows me.”

“It was like being at war. Although I have not been to war, it was the aftermath.”

“There’s alot of people we’ve taken away. There’s cities, the communities, after school sports. You’ve got drugs and gambling and guns and violence, all of that you will find, and young people following Big Brother to the dog fights. If you ask young people nowadays, alot of them have been to a dog fight but they don’t have a pet!”

I wouldn’t have minded so much if she wasn’t already 20 minutes late and if this was actually going to lead somewhere, but she also brought along a representative from the Humane Society to do a follow up. Realizing that this was going nowhere quick, we took off as soon as he took the stage. Apparently she did speak about her movie roles, which you can read about at The Rue Morturary, but even the moderator had no idea she was going to pull this stunt until three minutes before the event.

By the time we escaped it was too late to do anything else at the convention. At least I got a good story out of this disaster.
